Innovation Index

Welcome to the Innovation Index Project collaborative workspace

Innovation Nation, the DIUS White Paper on innovation (March 2008) states that NESTA will 'develop an Innovation Index to measure UK innovation in the round ... A pilot index will be published in 2009 with a fuller system in place by 2010.' For more information on the background to and content of the Index project, please see the 'Innovation Index library'.

The Innovation Index project is a major effort combining research rigour with policy relevance. However, it will only succeed through collaboration.

Please note that the Call for Ideas opened at the launch of the Index Project on July 7th 2008 closed at 5pm GMT on Friday 12th September, 2008.

Innovation Measurement Links

Here are some recent Innovation Measurement web pages I have come across recently: Boston Consulting Group (Aug. 2008) Innovation 2008: Is the Tide Turning? A survey of 3000 executives say they are less happy with their return on innovation (2008 43% happy, 2006 52% happy), and will spend less on innovation in 2008 (2008 63% spend more, 2006 72% spend more). 28 pages http://www.bcg.com/impact_… Continue

How can we value "innovation capability"?

Is the innovation capability of an organisation measurable as a financial asset and is it typically valued during due diligence at the time of acquisition? We all know that a Brand has a value (negative or positive - see previous post 'Innovatiion Beyond the Product) so is it possible to value other intangible assets such as innovation capability? What do we mean by 'innovation'?

Scott Berkun in "Why Innovation Is Overrated" on the Harvard Business blog....argues that the term "innovation" is vague and useless and we should be focsing on "making great things". I think that making "great things" will always be relevant but it is a very industrial-era concept that belongs to Edison. The world has moved-on and "innovation" needs to catch-up....here is my response: "… Continue

RIST Group meeting

On Wednesday, I was invited to make a presentation on the Index to the regular gathering of Regional Innovation, Science and Technology (RIST) leads for the RDAs and Devolved Governments. The meeting was held here at NESTA. The meeting was very useful, focusing primarily on the practicality of the Index and its usefulness to policymakers. We were encouraged to move the concept of innovation 'out of the too difficult' box. There was a readiness to accept the compromise that would be inherent in… Continue
